Manhart CRE 700: four cylinders with the sound of a V8 plus extra power.

German tuning studio Manhart Performance from Wuppertal has refined the plug-in hybrid sports sedan Mercedes-AMG C 63 S E Performance and tried to get rid of one of its main drawbacks — the unconvincing exhaust sound.

Sport sedan Mercedes-AMG C 63 S E Performance belongs to the W206 generation, that is to the last «tseshka» at the moment, it has made its world premiere in September 2022 and surprised Mercedes-Benz fans with the devaluation of the index.

In the last generation Mercedes-AMG C 63 S had a 4.0-liter 510-horsepower biturbo V8 engine (factory index M177) with a corresponding bassy growl, while the plug-in hybrid powertrain of the new Mercedes-AMG C 63 S E Performance is built around a 2.0-liter in-line «four» M139, equipped with a combined supercharger (the impeller is connected to an electric motor, which compensates for the natural turbo yoke) and supplemented by a starter-generator.

The rear wheels of the Mercedes-AMG C 63 S E Performance can be driven by both the internal combustion engine and a separate electric motor, combined in a single unit with a two-stage gearbox and rear differential.

The maximum combined output of the Mercedes-AMG C 63 S E Performance powertrain is 680 hp and 1,020 Nm.

It would seem to be a lot, but the maximum output is only available with a charged buffer battery with a capacity of 6.1 kWh.

In addition, the hybrid superstructure and standard for the new sports sedan all-wheel drive system led to the fact that the top «tseshka» with a change of generations has grown heavier by almost four centners: curb weight — 2165 kg!

The range on electric traction is only 13 km. The sound of the engine M139 in general is not bad, but only by measures of hot-hatch, for a medium-sized sedan in top equipment it lacks solidity.

In general, it turned out to be difficult, expensive, heavy and unconvincing in sound.
Specialists of Manhart Performance atelier can’t significantly lighten Mercedes-AMG C 63 S E Performance, but they have worked well with the exhaust: new exhaust manifold gives deeper and richer sound, similar to the sound of V8 exhaust.

M139 engine in addition received a new control unit MHtronik, which allowed to increase the maximum total output of the power plant to 725 hp and 1120 Nm.

As a result of Manhart pumping sports sedan received in addition a lowered suspension with springs H&R and new openwork wheels, shod in low-profile tires of 265/35 ZR 20 in front and 275/35 ZR 20 in the rear.
