The new Nio ET9 is a 900V luxury flagship sedan that adds 160 miles of range in 5 minutes.

Nio Day 2023 wasn’t just a glitzy affair with champagne toasts.

This marked the debut of the Chinese electric vehicle maker’s most premium offering to date, the flagship ET9 sedan.

Capable of competing with the Tesla Model S, Mercedes-Benz EQS, BMW i7, as well as their ICE-powered counterparts such as the S-Class and 7-Series, the ET9 offers a new 900-volt architecture, packing 700 hp almost under the hood .

It is due to hit the Chinese market next year, with first deliveries expected in early 2025.

Like Nio’s smaller EC7, the ET9 challenges traditional distinctions between coupe-crossovers and sedans. This is evident not only in its design, but also in its surprisingly high ground clearance for a full-size sedan.

The ET9 features a fastback coupe-style roofline while retaining Nio’s signature (and not-so-signature) design elements.

These include a sharp front end with slim headlights and a rear end that looks like the cross between a Jaguar F-Type and a Porsche Taycan.

However, unlike its little brother, the BMW i4-sized ET5, the ET9 doesn’t have a sporty exterior design. Instead, it resembles an extended version of Nio’s EC6 Coupe SUV.

In terms of dimensions, the ET9 measures 5,324 mm (209.6 in) in length, 2,016 mm (79.4 in) in width and 1,620 mm (63.8 in) in height, with a wheelbase of 3,250 mm (128 in).

By comparison, the Mercedes EQS is 5,265 mm (207.3 in) long, 1,520 mm (59.8 in) tall, 1,926 mm (75.8 in) wide and has a wheelbase of 3,210 mm (126.4 in).

Other notable features include hidden door handles, a retractable active rear spoiler and 23-inch multi-spoke wheels with a floating Rolls-Royce-inspired logo that remains upright while the car is in motion.

In addition, Nio says the ET9 boasts the only hands-free power opening and closing of the front trunk in its class.

Nio has not yet fully revealed the dashboard design, but has shared details about the rear cabin.

It’s clear that the company’s priorities are to pamper those in the back seat, almost like rolling out the red carpet for first class passengers.

The ET9’s rear seats offer up to 45 degrees of backrest adjustment, a 582 mm (22.9 in) seat cushion width, and 11 one-click adjustments.

Additionally, for added luxury, the car is equipped with seven power sunshades that can be activated at the touch of a button.

Other amenities include an 8-inch tablet-style screen located between the seats, a smart refrigerator with electric opening and closing, and two 14.5-inch AMOLED screens mounted on the front seatbacks.

Instead of a traditional dashboard, the ET9 uses a head-up display and a 15.6-inch tablet-style AMOLED screen on the center console.

Nio also mentions a retractable steering wheel design that can be retracted into the dashboard when the Smart Piloting feature is turned on.

Inside, the ET9 is built on Nio’s third-generation platform with a 900V architecture, the first in China to operate at the highest voltage of 925V.

This enables fast charging with a peak power of 600 kW and a peak current of 765 A.

This enables ultra-fast recharging of the 46,105-cell 120 kWh battery, Nio says, increasing the range by 255 km (nearly 160 miles) in just 5 minutes of charging.

Like other Nio products, ET9 supports full battery replacement in just 3 minutes.

The ET9 features Sky Ride, Nio’s intelligent chassis system that includes an electrically powered chassis, rear-wheel steering with a maximum angle of 8.3 degrees, and a fully active suspension system in which each shock absorber is independently controlled by a dedicated hydraulic pump

The ET9 is powered by two electric motors: a 180 kW (241 hp) front induction motor and a 340 kW (456 hp) rear permanent magnet synchronous motor. Together they provide a total output of 520 kW or 697 hp.

While Nio has not revealed plans for availability of the ET9 in other markets, it is currently open for pre-orders in China with deliveries scheduled for the first quarter of 2025.

Prices start at RMB 800,000 (about US$112,800 at current exchange rates). ).

Those who pre-order the ET9 will receive a number of benefits, including a discount of 5,000 to 10,000 yuan ($705 to $1,410) and up to 100 hours of free chauffeur service, among other perks.
