Ford introduced the GT Mk IV track supercar in production version
The new 2024 Ford GT Mk IV has debuted in the United States. This track supercar, created for the 24 Hours of Le Mans, made its production debut.
That is, ordinary people can buy it. However, it will be difficult to purchase an American new product.
The fact is that it was valued at $1.7 million. Also, the American company will release only 67 copies of the car.
Despite the general similarity with a track supercar, engineers have deeply redesigned this new product.
So, they modernized the chassis and improved the body, increasing its aerodynamics.
Carbon plastic was actively used in the design of the body of the new product, which reduces the overall weight of the car. In addition, engineers revised the equipment of the American model.
In October, Ford presented the latest road version of the second-generation GT supercar, which was named LM Edition, but the story did not end there: today a very special track version of the Mk IV was announced, it will be produced in an edition of 67 copies, each costing the buyer 1.7 million dollars.
The second generation Ford GT has been produced since 2016; supercars are assembled manually at the factory of the Canadian company Multimatic in Markham (Ontario).
In 2020, the car underwent a small technical upgrade, as a result of which the power of the 3.5-liter V6 EcoBoost twin-turbo petrol engine, paired with a 7-speed Getrag dual-clutch robot, was increased from 656 to 669 hp, changed suspension settings.
Production of the road Ford GT will end this year; in total, from 2016 to 2022, ten special versions of this model were released, including the aforementioned LM Edition, the total circulation of the “second” Ford GT will be 1,350 copies.
But the track-ready Ford GT Mk IV unveiled today stands apart — it should, in fact, be considered as a separate model.
The name of the new product and its circulation refer to the 1967 Ford GT40 Mk IV racing model, which won the Le Mans 24-hour marathon that same year.
The victory was the second for the Ford GT40 since the legendary 1966 Le Mans triumph, when three Ford GT40s took the top three places — a race and lead-up depicted in detail in the 2019 feature film Ford v Ferrari starring Matt Damon and starring Christian Bale.
Bale plays genius racing driver and mechanic Ken Miles in the film; at the end of the film, Miles tragically dies while testing the future GT40 Mk IV.
The Ford press service gives a very sparse technical description of the GT Mk IV; all that is known is that the track version has an increased wheelbase and a completely unique aerodynamic tail with an elongated rear, on which a fixed wide wing is installed (on the road Ford GT, the narrow wing can change height and angle attacks while driving).
The engine displacement has been increased (by how much is not reported), the maximum power exceeds 800 hp, a racing gearbox and racing suspension with Multimatic ASV adaptive shock absorbers have been installed.
Applications for the purchase of the Ford GT Mk IV are accepted on the Multimatic website; those interested need to fill out a short form and wait.
Ford itself will identify worthy buyers in the first quarter of next year, and shipment of finished cars to customers will begin in late spring.
Whether there will be a third generation Ford GT is still unknown. The pause between the first and second generations of the model lasted for ten long years.
Meanwhile, the first-generation supercar will return to the market next year through the efforts of the GT1 company from the American state of Michigan.
